Why is important to teach Measurements in Preschool?

When teaching measurement skills to young children provide lots of opportunities for the students to order objects by size. Measurements tools and skills have a variety of uses in everyday life.

Balance Working Sheet

Material:

Procedure:

The students will have a working sheet with a balance’s drawing. There will be a drawing in one side of the balance and they will have to draw in the other side another object, maybe heavier or lightweight.

Procedure:

The students will have different objects, some of them will be heavy, others lightweight , big and small. As a group, they will have to organize the objects given by the teacher according to their size and weight.

My Balance

Materials:

· Plastic hooks

· Plastic glasses

· Wool

· Rice and beans

· Paint and paintbrushes

Procedure:

The students will create their own Balance, following some steps. First, if the students want to, they can paint their glass and hook with their own creativity and imagination. To continue, they will have to make little holes in the plastic glass and put the wool in it. Then they will have to tie up the wool in the hook, one on each side. When this is ready, they will have to put rice in one of the glasses and beans in the other, they will have to measure which one is heavier.

PATTERNS

Why is important to teach Patterns in Preschool?

Patterns are all around us, from the clothing we wear to the repeating patterns found in nature and everyday routine. Patterning is also a basic math skill upon which many mathematical concepts are based.

Caterpillar Patterns

Materials:

· Caterpillar laminated cards

Procedure:

The child will put the correct color of pom poms in the caterpillar and in the last four spaces will have to complete the pattern.

Skittles Patterns Cards

Materials:

· Printed Cards

· Skittles

Procedure:

The child will use the skittles to complete the pattern in the cards and once they finish all the cards they will would create their own pattern.

Craft Stick Patterns

Materials:

· Flashcard with patterns

· Popsicle Stick

Procedure:

The child will have a flashcard and will have to follow the pattern using the popsicles.

Scooping and Pouring Patterns

Materials:

· Color rice

· Two glass or plastic bowls

· A glass milk bottle

· Plastic scoop

Procedure:

The child will reproduce a pattern, alternating the correct colors of rice depending on the pattern given by the teacher avoiding mixed them up. They will use a plastic scoop for this activity.

SORTING AND COMPARISONS

Why is important to teach Sorting and Comparisons in Preschool?

When children explore their environment, they notice how things are alike, and how they are different. They begin to sort them by characteristics that have meaning to them, characteristics such as color, size, shape, texture and sound. Children then begin matching objects that have the same characteristics. Not only is sorting and classifying a natural act for children, but children also find it interesting.

Dye Pasta Noddles

Materials:

Procedure:

The child will have to sort 3 bags of pasta and paint them using three different food coloring as he like and also vinegar.

City Shape Sorting

Materials:

· Milk Carton

· 2 pieces of black construction paper

· Sticky black foam

· Scissors

· Glue

Procedure:

Start by tracing the milk carton on the paper, then fold the 2 pieces and cut. You should have 4 identical pieces of black paper. Next, cut out 4 groups of different shapes from the foam, I did ovals, circles, rectangles and triangles, but feel free to do any shape you are learning about right now. Then match up the shapes on the paper. Then stick the pieces into the milk carton.

Five Green and Speckled Frogs

Procedure:

The child will have to cut five rectangles of brown construction paper, on each rectangle they will have to paste a frog on a side and the wave of water in the other side. And then put the brown rectangles around the tube.

TIME

Why is important to teach Time in Preschool?

This is one of the hardest topics for children, they need parent’s and teacher’s help to understand it better. By learning time in kingerdarten they can create their own schedules.

Daily Clock

Materials:

· Cardboard

Procedure:

The child will have to paint the cardboard and write the twelve numbers of the clock, then paste the drawings in order of the daily activities.

Cardboard Clock

Materials:

The child will paint the bath paper tube, then take the cardboard, cut the circle in two pieces of this one to do the clock hands. And then he will have to write the numbers 12,3,6 and 9 in the circle and paste all, finally he will have to cut a small wheel from the paper roll to simulate the watch bracelet and paste them with the other pieces.

My Own Clock

At first, you need to settle how many counting mats you want, I did from 1 to 10. You need to make rectangles on the cardboard and then cut them. When the rectangles are cut you start to draw or paint the numbers, try to do it in a BIG way. I did it with different colors and the colors of the pom poms match with the colors. When the numbers are dry you need to start pasting the amount of bottle caps according to the number. The child will have to take a pom pom of the color and put in the bottle cap. This way we practice repeting the numbers and it’s fun for them. And we work the fine motor skills.

Color Green

We can teach color green in preschool with beautiful and easy activities. It’s a fun color and they love it because they relate it with nature and different animals, we can develop their creativity and imagination too.

The child will create a green dough, by adding the full box of baking soda and some conditioner, they will have to mixed it with their fingers, while the teacher adds drops of food coloring, if is not very soft, we add more baking soda and more conditioner, until it’s squishy.

Procedure:

The child will have to rip of the tissue paper to make the turtle’s shell. I recommend having different types of green tissue paper, this way the turtle’s shell will look beautiful.
